After a solid showing in last month’s Santiago E-Prix, drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries were ready for action in Mexico City this Saturday – and action is precisely what they got. But unfortunately, a combination of driver mistakes, technical issues and sheer bad luck meant that neither driver finished the race.

Driver Stoffel Vandoorne started off in P10, despite clocking the second fastest time in the first qualifying group. He initially gained several positions from the outset and looked poised to score further points. However, he collided with the wall shortly before the end of the race and had to retire, bidding farewell to a contended P5 finish.

Teammate Nyck de Vries started off strong in the top six Super Pole, but ultimately didn’t fare better than Stoffel Vandoorne. After finding himself in a battle against DS Techeetah driver António Félix da Costa, Nyck de Vries ended in a collision with Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns. Nyck de Vries was then forced to leave the race stranded on the side of the track.

Both drivers expressed regret at the team’s finish, with Team Principal Ian James calling the race a “character-building experience for the whole team.” After Mexico City, our Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team is now third place overall in the team standing. Stoffel Vandoorne is now in fourth place for drivers and Nyck de Vries in eleventh. Read more from Ian James and the Team here.

Despite our drivers’ bad luck, onlookers enjoyed an action-packed, suspenseful day at the racetrack – which included over 100 Vestas employees. Both Vandoorne and De Vries also enjoyed Fanboosts again – thank you to everyone who voted to give our drivers an extra edge, #poweredbyVestas!

The next race is already in view, with the Marrakesh E-Prix coming up on February 29.
