For the sixth time since its inception, the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will return to Mexico for Round 3 of Season 8 this weekend. The all-electric series will take place in the high-altitude capital but with a different configuration to the Formula 1 race hosted here, instead returning to the 2,606km track configuration used in Season 6. Consisting of eight left-hand turns, eight right-hand turns, and a mixture of long straights and a narrow stadium section, the race is held at the highest altitude of any race on the season calendar, at 2,000 metres above sea-level. The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team return hoping to redeem their reputation for success in Mexico City, most recently retiring from the race here in the 2019/20 season.
Nyck de Vries, who is currently second in the overall drivers’ standings following a win in Round 1 in Diriyah, spoke of his early success as he looked ahead to Round 3: “We’ve had an encouraging start to the season but are very aware of the challenges that still lie ahead of us. We know how competitive our rivals are, so we have to bring our A game in order to remain major contenders.” His teammate, driver Stoffel Vandoorne, took the team’s strong start to the season as a sign to be cautionary moving forward: “The season-opener showed that we have to stay humble and continue to work hard on all the details if we want to compete consistently at the highest level.”
The race on Saturday will see fans return to the racetrack for the first time this season, and Team Principal of the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, Ian James, spoke of his excitement: “Mexico is always a fantastic place to visit. There is excitement in the air and the fans are extremely passionate about racing. Having fans return to the track for this weekend will, undoubtedly, be one of the highlights.”
