Qualifying was held early on Saturday in Jakarta and saw Stoffel set the fastest time in his group, moving through to the quarter-finals where he lost out and so started the race from P7 on the grid. His teammate Nyck set the fifth-fastest time in his own qualifying group which meant he in turn began the race from P9 on the grid for the inaugural Jakarta E-Prix.
Early in the race, Stoffel gained a position and then proceeded to hunt down the leading group, eventually crossing the finish line in fifth place, just four seconds shy of the race winner. This brought the team crucial points and means Stoffel maintains his lead in the Driver Standings. Nyck began the race safely in the points, until right before the end where he suffered a puncture caused by contact with another driver, who received a five-second penalty, and was forced to retire. The race lasted a total of 40 laps after a 1:30 minute extension to the race due to a safety car.
After Saturday’s race, Stoffel maintains his lead in the Drivers’ World Championship by 5 points and Nyck sits in sixth place. The Mercedes-EQ Fomrula E Team continue to head up the Team Championship Standings with 186 points.
After Saturday’s race, Team Principal, Ian James, spoke of the lessons to be learnt from the new race in Jakarta and expressed a determination to get the team back to the top of their game ahead of Marrakesh next month: “We definitely have things to take away from this event – positive and less positive – and we will ensure that we get back on form again for Marrakesh and beyond. Although we are still leading both championships, we need to ensure that we are consistently getting both cars into the points in the remaining races.”
The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team get a few weeks to refocus now ahead of the next race in Morocco in July, where the team will be hoping to redeem themselves by increasing their point-scoring streak and maintaining their position at the top of the Team Championship!
